Why I Love Online Clinical Supervision
Introduction to Supervision in Mental Health

My name is Sara Taveira, and I am a clinical psychologist and contributor to Online Therapy blog posts. With 18 years of experience in the mental health field, I have gained valuable insights into the profound impact of supervision on clinical practice. In this article, I will discuss supervision, why it is crucial for clients, supervisees, and supervisors alike, and the qualities that make for effective supervisory relationships.

What Is Supervision and Its Importance?

Online Clinical Supervision in mental health is integral to continuous professional development and serves as a constant learning investment. I see it as a means to increase efficacy, ethical safety, and the overall quality of clinical psychology practice across various contexts. The process is based on several principles, including guidelines and best practices, ethics, roles and responsibilities, and competency-based approaches. These principles are applicable across all theoretical models, professional roles, and contexts.

Interestingly, while supervision is recommended, it is not mandatory in all countries. However, I believe it is undeniable that supervision enhances the probability of better client outcomes, boosts skills, and supports ethical practice, regardless of where you are in your career.

Key Benefits of Online Clinical Supervision for All Parties Involved

In this opinion article, I do not intend to cover every detail of online clinical supervision from the perspective of a guideline, as I acknowledge that such information is widely available through psychology boards and associations. Instead, I aim to highlight key benefits of online clinical supervision derived from my own experiences.

Enhancing Service Quality

Supervision serves the broader purpose of helping all parties provide better services to clients and society as a whole. As mental health specialists, we share an ethical duty to act in the public’s best interest while upholding high standards. As consumers of mental health services, you can certainly appreciate the value of quality care.

Online Clinical Supervision Promoting Reflection and Evaluation

Group supervision can be an effective way to receive online clinical supervision via Zoom or in person supervision.

Supervision at the clinical practitioner level encourages constant reflection and evaluation of your practice. It helps address your skills, biases, knowledge, and performance across various roles and informs your socio-cultural awareness. By engaging in this reflective process, you can keep learning, continuously pursue evidence-based practices, and effectively manage the ethical dilemmas that arise in your work.

“Unblending” Personal Experiences

Importantly, online clinical supervision and face-to-face supervision aid in “unblending” your personal life experiences from your professional role, promoting a mindful approach to the client-therapist dynamic. This includes recognising gaps and limitations in your skills, becoming more aware of personal predispositions, and understanding how life stressors may impact your practice at any given moment. Additionally, it helps identify countertransference responses that may hinder the quality of therapeutic relationships. Just as we appreciate a painting better from a distance, gaining an objective perspective is crucial to our work.

Addressing Professional Isolation

Supervision is invaluable for clinicians who practice alone. It decreases professional isolation and helps mitigate the risks of biased formulations and interventions in treatment, both of which can lead to less effective practice and poorer client outcomes.

Qualities of an Effective Supervisor

Reflecting on my early career, I remember a supervisor whose authoritarian approach made me reluctant to share anything other than “successful cases.” As a result, my professional growth was limited during those supervision sessions. However, as I continued to grow in my practice, I encountered outstanding supervisors who created a safe space that allowed me to be open, honest, and proactive about my learning experiences.

I discovered that empathy, curiosity, openness, warmth, and safety are crucial qualities in an excellent supervisor. Only with this enabling and trusting foundation can you present cases involving ethical dilemmas, complex presentations, or countertransference patterns that need to be addressed.

The Importance of a Supervision Contract

The process of reflecting on your practice can be complex and vulnerable, but it is essential for your growth as a clinician. For this reason, we need clear boundaries, expectations, rights, and duties, which should be outlined in a good supervision contract. This contract establishes that the relationship is a collaborative one, where feedback and evaluation go both ways, and expectations are clearly shared.

Fostering Self-Awareness and Mindfulness

I have benefited significantly from supervisors who were attuned to my needs and taught me how to increase my self-awareness and mindfulness, especially in the therapy room. This “unbending” process is crucial for any therapeutic relationship and pivotal in our clients’ healing journeys.

The Transformative Power of Curiosity

Moreover, a supervisor’s curiosity can be transformative. Through open, inquisitive, and contemplative questions, I have gained new perspectives on my clients’ processes and presentations. Effective supervisors learn from the sessions and approach the work honestly and humbly. Identifying additional training needs, respecting diversity and inclusion, and remaining alert to issues of ethnicity, culture, and gender are also vital elements of a supervisor.
