About Michael Han — Counselling in English and Mandarin
Kia ora, I’m Michael.
If you’re feeling anxious, weighed down, disconnected, or stuck in patterns that are hard to shift, I’d be glad to walk alongside you.
I work with adults across Aotearoa New Zealand in English, Mandarin, or whatever mix of the two feels most natural. For many Mandarin-speaking clients, counselling in their first language can feel very different — it may be the first time they can speak openly about stress, relationships, family expectations, identity, migration, or emotional pain with someone who understands both the cultural background they grew up with and the reality of building a life in New Zealand.
My approach is warm, respectful, and practical. I listen carefully, ask honest questions, and draw on evidence-based tools so that our work is not only about insight, but about finding clearer ways forward. I aim to create a space where you can feel heard without judgement, make sense of what’s been happening, and develop tools that stay useful beyond the session.
Background
Before moving into private practice, I spent over six years working in mental health settings in Aotearoa New Zealand — sitting with people through stress, emotional distress, relationship challenges, life transitions, and complex personal circumstances.
I trained at the University of Auckland, completing an MSc in Psychology and a PgDip in Counselling, and am currently completing the Master of Counselling (expected October 2026). I am a member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) and practise under its Code of Ethics.
What I Help People With
• Anxiety, low mood, and chronic stress
• Relationships — partner, family, and parent-child dynamics
• Cross-cultural challenges, identity, and migration-related distress
• Mandarin-speaking clients seeking counselling in their first language
• Burnout, workplace stress, and major life transitions
• Motivation, direction, and working towards personal goals
• Emotional regulation and coping skills
Outside the Therapy Room
Photography is my anchor outside of work — the practice of slowing down and paying attention mirrors what I value in therapy.
